Guiding Your Feelings: A Step-by-Step Guide to the “Emotional Rescue” Quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Popular Now

The highly-anticipated “Emotional Rescue” update for Disney Dreamlight Valley has arrived, bringing with it a new realm and two new villagers from Pixar’s Inside Out. To unlock these new friends—Joy and Sadness—players must first complete the main quest of the new realm, also titled “Emotional Rescue.” This quest will take you on a journey through Riley’s mind, where you will be tasked with repairing her emotional control center, solving memory puzzles, and finally, getting a job as a “Mind Worker.” This guide will walk you through every step of this multi-part quest, from the very beginning to the moment you welcome your new friends to the Valley.
Step 1: The Incomplete Memory
Your journey begins at the top floor of the Dream Castle. You will notice a new, brightly colored door. Interacting with the door will reveal that it is the entrance to the new Inside Out realm. However, it won’t open. Instead, a glowing, broken memory orb will fall out. Your first task is to speak with Merlin, who will tell you that the memory is incomplete and needs to be infused with both joy and sadness to be repaired. To do this, you must:
- Add Joy: Merlin will instruct you to cook “any meal that makes you happy.” The game’s developers have confirmed that any meal you cook at a cooking station in your valley or at Chez Remy will work. The key is the act of cooking and the intention behind it.
- Add Sadness: Next, you must capture a feeling of sadness. To do this, you will need to take a picture of a Night Thorn. These pesky dark plants are scattered all over the Valley and are a perfect symbol of sorrow. Open your in-game phone and snap a picture of one to infuse the memory with sadness.
Once you’ve completed both of these tasks, the memory in your inventory will transform into a “Complete Memory.” Return to the Dream Castle, and you will find that the door to the Inside Out realm is now open, allowing you to step inside.
Step 2: Fixing the Emotional Console
Upon entering the realm, you will be greeted by an exuberant but panicked Joy. She will inform you that Riley’s main emotional console has malfunctioned, and parts have flown all over the room. Your objective here is to find all the missing components. These are:
- Curiosity Sliders: Found behind a large, orange couch to the left of where Joy is standing.
- Envy Button: Located near a distinctive dark purple door, to the right of the console.
- Broken Caution Grips and Broken Caution Connectors: These are found near the crafting station at the back of the room. You will need to combine them at the crafting station to create the final piece, the “Caution Sliders.”
Once you have all four of the console’s components, you can return to the main console and interact with it to carefully reinstall each piece. This will reboot Riley’s emotional control center and allow you to proceed with the quest.
Step 3: Solving the Memory Lane Puzzle
With the console back online, a new problem emerges. The memory walls, which are used to send memories to long-term storage, are not working. Joy will task you with solving two “routing control” puzzles by pressing a series of red buttons. The goal is to get all the flippers to be perfectly horizontal so that the memory orbs can pass through.
- Puzzle #1: This puzzle is located in front of the console. There are two flippers: one green and one red. The solution is simple. Press the left button once, which will turn both flippers vertical. Then, press the right button once to turn them both horizontal, which is the correct alignment.
- Puzzle #2: This second puzzle is near the entrance of the realm. There are three flippers: blue, green, and red. To solve this puzzle, you must press the left button to drop the blue flipper and raise the green one. Immediately after, hit the right button to drop both the green and red flippers, which will align all three and successfully route the memories.
Step 4: Gear Up and Go
After solving the memory puzzles, Joy will give you a new task: you must go into the Long Term Memory area to find Sadness. But first, you’ll need to gear up. Head to the back of the room, near the crafting station, and look for a series of lockers underneath a staircase. Inside, you will find two clothing bags. Open them to receive your “Mind Worker” helmet and gloves. Equip them from your wardrobe, and a central elevator in the room will activate. Interact with the elevator to be taken to the Long Term Memory area. This final action will complete the “Emotional Rescue” quest and begin the next one, “Out of the Blue,” which will take you deeper into Riley’s mind and eventually lead you to unlocking both Joy and Sadness as permanent villagers in your Valley.
